Shoot You Down

One of the things I’ve been saying when asked (on virtually a daily basis) what impact new media will have on the election campaign, is that it will be far more difficult for politicians to get away with spinning a line, unless it’s backed up by solid evidence. Witness the Tories this week, who thought that if they said often enough that violent crime has gone up under Labour, they’d be able to fool most of the people most of the time. Enter the BBC’s Mark Easton, who has comprehensively rubbished their claim. Are the Tories being honest with their claims on violent crime? he asks. The answer is no.

Channel 4’s Fact Checker is also worth keeping an eye on. Here it is on Chris Grayling’s claim that parts of Britain bring to mind episodes of The Wire. More scaremongering from the Tories.
