The ballad of Cable Hogue*

So Vince Cable is standing down as Deputy Leader of the Lib Dems to concentrate on his day job. Rather a marked contrast between the way they elec their Deputy Leader (electorate = 57 MPs) and they way we elect ours (electorate = c4 million party members and trade union political levy payers). I think Jo Swinson should run for it!

* Poor excuse to show video for a great song. Can’t beat a mariachi band.

Utter hypocrisy considering how ‘democratic’ Gordon Brown’s leadership ‘election’ was.

I am astounded that the Labour party electoral college only comprises 1/3 party members for leadership elections, and 1/2 trade unions for the London Mayoral candidate election.

The Liberal Democrats involve members at every level of politics, from backing the coalition deal to making every members’ vote count in a leadership election and electing a chairman.

Unions still have too much power in deciding the direction of the Labour party and I am amazed that members are not more unhappy about only having 1/3 of a vote in leadership elections.

    Great song though! 🙂
