Family affair

The ConDemolition announced this week that they’re cutting the summer parliamentary recess.

We break up on 26th July, come back for a couple of weeks on 6th September, break up again for three weeks for the Party Conferences, and then come back on October 11th. And so they should, people will no doubt say.

Those people being people who, despite my best efforts, refuse to accept that recess does not mean we’re on holiday. It just means the House isn’t sitting. Most of us will be busy working in our constituencies, or joining the party leadership campaign trail, or writing doorstep-sized biographies of Pitt the Younger and the Duke of Buckingham.

But spare a thought for the Scots… One of the reasons why we have such a long summer recess is that Scottish school holidays are entirely different to English (and Welsh?) ones. They break up somewhere round the end of June, and go back mid-August.

So Scottish MPs with families in their constituencies, who are lucky if they see their kids at all during the working week and look forward to spending quality time with them during recess, will only have two weeks in which to do so. And, to add insult to injury, Parliament resuming on October 11th coincides with the start of Scottish half-term.

Of course this matters little to David “One Scot” Cameron (and how gutted must that one Scottish Tory be at his sure fire bet of being Scottish Secretary being cruelly dashed by the deal with the Lib Dems.) Nick Clegg doesn’t have many Scottish MPs either, and I don’t think Danny Alexander’s kids are old enough for school. Certainly not the one that was born a week or so after the election. Obviously.

It doesn’t make much difference to me either. But I feel sorry for the Scots.

PS Apologies to people who clicked on this thinking it would be about David Laws and got a frankly rather boring filler instead.

Moan, moan, moan, it if that’s awful why didn’t you get it changed when your party was in power?

    Oh.

I thought this was going to be about David Laws.

Go, girlfriend. Stick it to the man, etc.

Seriously, why would an of you lot keep it under wraps for it to blow up later? Better to declare everything last year when it’s all going off big time. No one except Laws cares about his sexuality.

Then again, this time last year I doubt he expected to end up as Chief Sexuality to the Treasury.

Er… in response to the first comment. We did.

And as for the second, I didn’t actually get to moderate that comment, and I’m not entirely comfortable with your emphasis on the sexuality element. That’s not what the story is about. But I’m posting on that in a moment.

No problem – delete it if you’re not comfortable with it.

As usual Dave and Gideon are suiting themselves, and no doubt anyone’s forthcoming September deliveries? PM on paternity leave but let’s not call it that as it might cause problems with the electorate.

As for David Laws. Presumably Numeracy is his forte which is why he is a successful banker and why he has this particular job in the cabinet. It cannot be one rule for him and another for the rest of us. He should resign and be grateful that the taxpayers don’t sue for loss of revenue. I’m not interested in excuses. If he didnt know (and that is stretching our imagination somewhat!) then clearly he is unfit for office and if he did know then clearly he is unfit for office. Any other company would have fired him. And I cannot be doing with anyone playing any card to try and excuse their wrongdoing. Next!

On a seperate note.. Anyone know how the investigation into Gideon’s expenses is going?
