Having said that… I mean, having said that I find the assembled ‘talent’ on the Tory benches a depressing sight, there was a very fine maiden speech today from one of their number, the new MP for Blackpool North and Cleveleys, Paul Maynard, who has cerebral palsy. And I’m not saying this in a patronising, ‘didn’t he do well’ way. It was genuinely very good and I suspect a strong candidate for maiden speech of the year.

We also had good, thoughtful maiden speeches today from Streatham’s Chuka Umunna and Luton South’s Gavin Shuker. Chuka is of course “Britain’s Obama” and expected to shine. Gavin might not currently appear on anyone’s “Top Ten to Watch” lists, not being an ex-spad or a mate of the sort of people who compile such lists, but I think he might make it onto mine. And not because he’s from Luton! It was a very good speech. If this link doesn’t take you straight there you’ll have to skip to 6.43pm.

I couldn’t stay in the Chamber for all the speeches, but there were hordes of newbies trying to speak today. Will have to try and catch up with them over the weekend. Oh, and Ed was very good too.

I hope that’s not a lascivious ‘Oh Chuka’ young lady. We don’t allow that sort of behaviour on this blog!
