Pills and soap

A Twitter storm – or should that be Twyphoon? – started yesterday with the hashtag #homeopathyEDMs.

David Tredinnick, the Conservative MP for Bosworth, has tabled four EDMs on homeopathic medicine and insomnia, depression, breast cancer and the BMA, which can be found here. This has caused something of an uproar amongst the Sense About Science crowd, Dr Ben Goldacre, former MP Dr Evan Harris and others, who are calling for the end to NHS funding of homeopathy and challenging the scientific basis of Tredinnick’s claims. Apparently Dr Julian Huppert, the new Lib Dem MP for Cambridge has tabled some amendments, which I think have been drafted by Evan Harris, but they don’t appear on the EDMs database yet.

On a related note, Dr Simon Singh is appearing at the Oxfam Bookfest, on 17th July at Bristol’s Old Vic, to talk about alternative medicine and his libel trial. I’ve already got my tickets.
