What have you done for me lately?

We haven’t quite divvied up responsibilities within the Shadow DWP team yet – we’ve all been involved in post-Budget scrutiny, spotting the small print, the scams, the sleights of hand, of which more no doubt on Monday when IDS and Yvette kick off the final day of the Budget debate. But it looks as if I’ll probably be given the Disabilities brief (NB this is only until we have a new leader, Shadow Cabinet elections and a reshuffle in the autumn). The portfolio covers a host of issues, from the ESA regime and Work Capability Assessments, the Budget plan to cut DLA (for that is what it is) and the future of the Independent Living Fund, to support for carers and the impact of public sector cuts, especially at local authority level, on services for people with disabilities. This, commissioned by the Guardian for its website, is an excellent collection of first-hand experiences, from people with disabilities and carers. Should be required reading for IDS and his team.
