#demo2010

I *want* to blog about the events of yesterday, i.e. the demo against cuts to university funding, the proposed £9000 cap on fees, and the scrapping of EMAs, but I’m a bit pushed for time.

To keep you occupied while you’re waiting for me to gather my thoughts/ deal with hundreds of emails, you might want to check out this eyewitness account from Laurie Penny (@PennyRed) for the New Statesman. (The URL for the story ends with “young-scary-future-riot-crowd” which has a certain brilliance all of its own. Should be a song title).

And here’s the statement from the Commons today, with contributions from a variety of MPs, some more sensible than others… (which is putting it politely). I was in Bill Committee so couldn’t make it into the Chamber myself. Here’s a taster:

Conor Burns (Bournemouth West) (Con): Yesterday afternoon I agreed to give an interview outside St Stephen’s entrance to some students from Nottingham university. After that interview we were joined by a bearded, slovenly man in his 40s wearing an “End capitalism now” badge—

Tbh,was the demo against cuts to university funding, the proposed £9000 cap on fees, and the scrapping of EMAs, anything to do with you? No.

Was the EDM anything to do with you? Yes.

So why blog about something you had no control over, vs something you actually did two days ago (apparently on the instruction of Lord Dawn of Bristol)?

OK yesterday Labour sponsored Browne review now opposes it. Ditto reductions in Housing Benefit. Now apparently the 50% tax should go when conditions allow depending on which Lab minister has the trousers. Ed M liked 90 day detention now says liberty should not be a Tory issue.

Can you convince Labour has a coherent programme it would actually perform in Govt or is it in “Say Anything” mode?
