X Factor EDM

Just had an email asking me to sign this:

That this House condemns the email sent to music colleges by X Factor researchers offering work at industry agreed rates to “camera friendly” female violinists; notes that this offer was based on the condition that applicants were not to be Musicians’ Union members; believes that this not only discriminates against trade union members, it also discriminates on the grounds of sex; and believes that a successful show like the X Factor should be setting a good example and paying its musicians a decent wage and condemns discrimination of any kind.

It appears clearly discriminatory to me and completely unacceptable. I don’t watch the X Factor, so can’t boycott it, but will pass on this information to those who do watch it.

Outrageous. I’m a musician of many years experience and I’ve many tales of woe around this subject – players being chosen merely for being ‘camera friendly’. This is exactly why the MU exists – to protect what is a highly skilled but largely very poorly paid workforce from exploitative and discriminatory employers. I hope they take the X Factor to task on this.

Did you know the Musicians Union AGM next year is going to be held in Bristol? Think it’s around March time…

Look at me! I’m an offense-seeker!

It’s worse, the rates were BELOW the union recommended rate, less than half, in fact
