FiRe Control

Just had a letter from Bob Neill, Minister for Fire Services, announcing that he’s pulling the plug on FiReControl, the Regional Fire Centre project. This will be welcomed by the local FBU who have long campaigned against the proposal.

I’ve written to several Ministers on this over the years (I think four at least, the job was one of those which changed hands regularly), put down parliamentary questions, met with firefighters lobbying parliament, and in July had a meeting with Bob Neill at which he more or less told us, in a nudge-and-a-wink style, that we could expect an announcement before Parliament rose for the summer recess. Well now it’s Christmas recess, but better late than never. There are questions to be answered now about what happens to the Control Centre at Taunton, and how much the failed project has cost; the Minister has already said that details of the financial settlement with the contractor are confidential.
