Vigilante man

I don’t reallly know who Mouse Zinn is, except that he’s also in a band called the Space Cadets with a guy I know from Luton, Ricky Lee Brawn. And I ‘think’ I’ve seen him DJ-ing at a rockabilly club, where he goes under the name DJ Mouse.

The guy in the video doing a rather unconvincing impression of a vigilante man is also a rockabilly DJ, by the name of The Preacher. Here’s the Preacher interviewing DJ Mouse if you’re interested….

Anyway, the reason I’m posting this is because the backing band, the Union Canal String Band – so called because one of them lives on a canal boat on said canal – are good mates of mine. Aka The Boring Bluegrass Boys (by me if no-one else – OK, just by me) because it’s difficult to tempt them away from their old man’s music these days. I remember when the mandolin player had a pink Mohican…

This is a Woody Guthrie song. There’s a musical based on his life story and songs on in London at the moment, called Woody Sez. Anyone seen it?

Strange that a bunch of blokes from Luton should attempt to be ‘authentic’ by adopting a style of music almost a century old from another continent.

Oddly, wearing a pink mohican and thrashing away at three chords would have much more to do with the English folk tradition …

I agree actually. But they’re not the only ones. Isn’t there a local bluegrass band with members of Portishead in it? I saw a gig advertised once at the Boca Bar.
