Boris Nemtsov jailed

Disturbing news from Russia that Boris Nemtsov, former Deputy Prime Minister and outspoken critic of Putin, has been jailed for 15 days after taking part in New Year’s Eve protests. This comes after he spoke out recently in criticism of the jailing of Russian oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky on embezzlement charges, and only a few months after he was arrested for carrying a flag through the streets of Moscow.

Long-suffering readers of this blog may recall my post from 2008, musing on the need of Russian politicians to demonstrate their sporting prowess, which was really just an excuse to post this picture. And now I have another excuse…. those trousers are probably an arrestable offence in themselves.
