Was texted a little while ago with the news that the Prime Minister will be making a statement to Parliament tomorrow about Libya and the No Fly Zone resolution. Of course, as it’s Friday tomorrow I’m already in Bristol, and have a full day ahead, including speaking to sixth form students, visiting Mencap and a busy surgery. Tempting as it would be to jump on the train first thing tomorrow – although we don’t know what time the statement will be – it’s not fair, and probably not possible, to cancel everything at such short notice.
It will only be a statement tomorrow, with the opportunity to ask the Prime Minister one question. I hope that it’s either repeated on Monday or, better still, time is allowed for a full debate. We don’t have particularly urgent business on Monday; it’s the report stage and Third Reading of the Budget Responsibility Bill, which I’m leading on it for Labour (quite happy to step aside!) On Tuesday it’s another day in committee on the floor of the House for the Scotland Bill, which I wouldn’t have thought was particularly pressing either. On Wednesday it’s the Budget, so if there is going to be a debate on Libya, it needs to be done before then.
