Jerry Leiber

Jerry Leiber, songwriter for Elvis, composer of “Stand by Me”, has died… here’s one of my favourites. David Bowie did a very bad cover I seem to recall.

He, Stoller and producer Otis wrote Hound dog – about a woman tired of her gigolo – in 1952. Glorious gentle humour all round

For Big Momma Thornton. Not much like Elvis Presley’s affectionate piss take.

There’s probably a great top ten out there of rather lascivious bluesy tracks by women… Rosetta Tharpe for example.

Michael McDonald rocked it with his version of I Keep Forgettin

And Warren G & Nate Dogg (RIP 2011) used that particular version to tasty effect in the remix to Regulate.
