Hanging around

Just as an aside…. You will have just heard the Deputy Speaker say “will the Serjeant inspect the Noe lobby” as he did at the end of the first vote. That’s because everyone’s finished voting in the Aye lobby, and the tellers have reported back the numbers, but it’s been 15 minutes or so and the Noes haven’t returned. Given that 122 people just voted Aye and only 10 voted Noe, you may wonder what kept them so long. The answer of course is that they’re using delaying tactics, trying to string things out for as long as possible. It’s a tactic that’s also used at the end of the day, when, say, one vote has been called at 9.42-ish and the whips don’t want another vote squeezed in before the 10pm cut-off.
